Bardarbunga Volcano, Iceland

Bardarbunga is the second highest volcano in Iceland, a large caldera filled with ice over 2000 ft (700 m) deep which sits on the northwest edge of the immense Vatnajokull icefield.

To the east and south, the icefield falls away gently for many miles, while the northwest side of Bardarbunga has a steep drop into the lava-flow-filled valley below. The standard skiing and climbing route comes from the road to the north, ascending the northeast slope to the summit.
